Ladysmith Secondary School Musical Theatre students decided to find a new way to share their talents. Due to COVID-19, they were unable to perform the hit musical Newsies this spring. Keeping with the spirit of the show, part of the cast took initiative to create a video that would commemorate this show and their hard work.
Newsies is a musical that takes place in New York City during 1899. This story follows Jack Kelly and his team of newsboys as they try to make a living selling newspapers. However, when Joseph Pulitzer raises the price of “papes”, these young boys must stick together to fight against his newspaper “The World”. To help them succeed in their journey, the strong-willed journalist, Katherine Plumber, decides to follow their story.
This project was led by our own versions of Jack Kelly, who are Logan Steel, Michaela Segreto, and Aedan Geiger. These three individuals are responsible for the videography, organization, and music. They spent countless hours making sure that this show and their hard work would be properly honoured. Another huge thank you goes out to Heather Priestly, the costume designer who fitted every single cast member that is shown in the video.
Just like the Newsies, it takes each and every person to get the job done. Each participating cast member made sure to fully commit themselves to creating something beautiful. In the words of the Newsies themselves “so the world says no, well the kids do too. Try to walk all over us we’ll stomp all over you.”
